The Roman Empire Lesson 3

The Pax Romana The republic was over. For the next 500 years, emperors would govern Rome. The first 200 years was called the Pax Romana, which meant a time of peace and prosperity. During this time, the Roman army became the world’s most powerful fighting force. Rome controlled a vast empire on three continents during the Pax Romana.

TALK ABOUT IT! What was the Pax Romana? We learned yesterday that Augustus was a good emperor. How do you think events that happened prior to Augustus’s coming to power set the stage for success? Do you think people were proud to be citizens of Rome during the Pax Romana? Why or why not?

Government and Law The Roman Empire covered a huge area with many different groups of people. People spoke many different languages and followed many different religions. The Romans were able to unite and rule all of these people through several ways: ◦Offering citizenship to many of them ◦Besides speaking their own language, there was a common language, Latin. ◦Using Roman roads, obeying Roman laws, and were defended by Roman armies

Government and Law The Romans did the best job of creating a code of laws that all people in the Empire could follow. Much of the legal system in the United States is based on the principles the Romans developed: ◦All free people have equal rights before the law ◦Innocent until proven guilty ◦Accused people should be allowed to face their accusers and defend themselves. ◦Judges must interpret the law and make decisions fairly. ◦People have rights that no government can take away.

TALK ABOUT IT! Why do you think the Romans worked to extend their empire? In what ways did the Romans unite and rule all of the people under its empire? What do the basic principles of law guarantee for Roman citizens?

Entertainment The Romans celebrated many holidays through plays and religious ceremonies. Thousands of Romans crowded into the Colosseum to see organized battles fought by gladiators. They often fought to the death.

TALK ABOUT IT! What do the Romans’ many celebrations tell you about the empire?

Roman Arts and Language The Romans took great pride in their skills as builders. (The Colosseum and aqueducts) Remember that the Roman language, Latin, helped to unite the people. Latin is the basis for many European languages spoken today. The Roman alphabet was influenced by the alphabets of earlier cultures. Roman numerals uses combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet to signify values.

TALK ABOUT IT! What parts of their culture did Romans bring to lands they conquered? What effect do Roman builders, artists, and writers have on the world today? FYI-many visited the Roman Baths for relaxation or talk over business. This was a public gathering place, to sit in a “sauna” just like a hot springs resort today.

Your ticket out of the door… Get a Think Pad piece of paper and construct a question about today’s lesson using one of the following words. Pretend you are making up a question that would be on the ancient Rome test. Write the answer to your question on the back of your sticky note.
