3. Introduction The word disaster is derived from Middle French désastre Old Italian disastro, which in turn comes from the Greek pejorative prefix δυσ -, (dus-) "bad" + ἀστήρ (aster), "star“. The root of the word disaster ("bad star" in Greek) comes from an astrological theme in which the ancients used to refer to the destruction or deconstruction of a star as a disaster.

4. Definition : A disaster is a natural or man-made (or technological) hazard resulting in an event of substantial extent causing significant physical damage or destruction, loss of life, or drastic change to the environment.

Core concept : Droughts : Drought is unusual dryness of soil, resulting in crop failure and shortage of water for other uses, caused by significantly lower rainfall than average over a prolonged period. Hot dry winds, high temperatures and consequent evaporation of moisture from the ground can contribute to conditions of drought.

8. Droughts : Drought is an extended period of months or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply whether surface or underground water. Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region. There are 6,201 villages where the kharif yield is below 50 paise and 1,552 villages where the rabi yield was below 50 paise. 3,299 villages in Marathwada region affected by drought Only 9% water was left in the dams compared with 30 per cent last year.

14. Facts : The four districts are most affected, although almost all the eight districts in the region are facing acute drinking water problem. Almost every family in Marathwada region is spending a substantial part of its salary on buying water. residents of Bankawadi are forced to drink smelly, slimy water from a well that in better times even animals would refuse to use.
