2. Common Core Georgia joined with 47 other states well over a year ago to develop a set of core standards for K- 12 in English language arts and mathematics. On June 2, the Common Core State Standards were released. These standards provide a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. These standards represent a common sense next step from the Georgia Performance Standards. The Georgia State Board of Education adopted the CCGPS on July 8, 2010.

5. Writing Step Up to Writing (Paragraph burrito) Visual tool to help organize writing Teaches students how to develop a thesis, utilize a variety of transitions, and support their reasoning with evidence, examples, and explanations

6. Grammar Daily Grammar Practice – Supports the idea that students learn better in smaller increments over an extended period of time rather than “big chunks” of information – Each week, students have a sentence where they have to perform different activities each day

7. Scholastic Reading Skills Reading Comprehension Vocabulary Building Conventions/grammar Students self-assess

8. Journals Students use journals for note-taking, writing, class work, and free-writing.

9. Vocabulary Weekly vocabulary quizzes – Varies from teacher to teacher
