2 The Cost of Higher Education There are two main costs associated with studying a higher education course: Tuition Fees (£6,750max) Maintenance Costs For part time students there is a loan available to cover the full cost of the tuition fees However there are no Government loans to help with living costs 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield

3 Tuition fee loan Available to all home and EU students Students can’t already hold a qualification equal to or higher than the one you wish to study for Students must be studying at a course intensity of at least 25% The tuition fee loan will cover whatever the tuition fee is each year (up to £6,750) 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield

5 Support from the University of Sheffield Part time University Bursary on a pro rata basis – you must be studying a FTE of at least 50% Financial Support – small grants available for childcare and additional travel costs 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield

8 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield Student on full time, foundation programme with DLL with a household income of less than £25,000 will receive the maximum bursary (£3,000) regardless of postcode and grades Sheffield Bursary Scheme

9 Repaying your student loan Repayments start: - The April after you graduate - When you are earning over £21,000 Interest is charged Anything unpaid after 30 years is written off 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield

10 You pay back 9% of anything over £21,000 that you earn Therefore if you earn £22,000; you repay 9% of £1000 - £90 per year or £7.50 per month Repayments are based on what you earn not what you owe 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield Repaying the loans

11 Financial Support Fund Registered students can apply to the Financial Support Fund Financial support contributes towards the additional costs incurred while you study These maybe awarded to cover extra childcare costs whilst you are studying In certain cases the fund may cover exceptional travel costs Students whose DSA does not cover all their additional study costs may receive an award 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield

12 You can apply for disabled student’s allowance (DSA) if you are studying more than 30 credits and have a: Disability or long-term health condition Mental health condition Specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia Your household income is not taken into account and the DSA’s will pay for some additional support your disability requires for you to study at university 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield Disabled Students Allowance

13 As a part-time student you can usually still claim benefits which depend on your household income (means-tested benefits), such as income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Housing Benefit and Local Housing Allowance Your fee loan will not be treated as income when assessing any means-tested benefit You are not entitled to a Council Tax exemption, however you may be eligible for Council Tax Reduction 05/10/2015© The University of Sheffield Benefits
