Social Studies Fair Orientation Meeting Thursday, September 5, 2013 Instructional Services Center (ISC)

2 Purpose of the Social Studies Fair
The student…. Develops a visual and verbal presentation on a selected topic (approved by the teacher) Gathers and analyzes data Interprets findings Reports conclusions The teacher… Uses a variety of instructional techniques for guiding students in understanding social studies concepts and research methodology

3 The Social Studies Fair…
Improves students’ skills in Social Studies through: Evaluation of student work according to established criteria Communication with judges, fair officials, and their teachers

4 The Social Studies Fair…
Recognizes and rewards students’ academic competence in Social Studies through: Ribbons Certificates Other appropriate recognition

5 Project Requirements Individuals or groups of up to three students
Grades K-12 (School Fair) Grades 5-12 (District, Region, State Fair) All projects must have a completed entry form Best in Fair Winner 2013

6 Project Regulations Grade Classes Display Board Class I-Grades 5-6
Class II-Grades 7-8 Class III-Grades 9-10 Class IV-Grades 11-12 Display Board 30 inches in depth (front to back) 48 inches in width (when opened) 60 inches in height

7 A Complete Project Consists of:
Research/Summary Paper Visual Presentation (Display Board) Abstract

8 Research/Summary Paper
Must be typed 4-5 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font Research Question/problem being explored Methodology Research Findings Conclusion Bibliographic references

9 Visual Presentation (Display Board)
Clear statement of the research question/problem (hypothesis, question, or purpose Methodology (procedures used in research) Visuals (illustrate or enhance research findings) Conclusion (based on analysis and interpretation of the data) 3-D visuals/models (optional but should be the work of the student)

10 Abstract The abstract (precise description of the project) should be placed on an index card. Title Statement of problem or question Methodology Conclusion Place on display table during set up of the project

11 Steps to Complete a Project
Choose a Topic (must be approved by a teacher) Related to one of the Social Studies Disciplines Not too broad – “What happened during WWII” Not too limited- “What crops are grown in Georgia” Topics can range from current issues to a historical question

Formulate a Research Question (Teacher approval) Questions should begin with “What” or “How” Conduct Research Utilize multiple sources Summarize the Data Draw a Conclusion Write a Summary/Research Paper Rough Draft Final Draft- free of errors
