10 Focus on Style: Voice Your "voice" is the way that you "speak" on paper. It is how your words come across to the reader, and it will be different for every writer. Voice depends on the style you choose - formal, informal, technical, chatty, poetic - and the words you choose to express this style - simple words, scientific words, "high-falutin" words, slang words.

11 Read House on Mango Street Excerpts At what points does the author use voice in her writing? Why is the voice of these pieces so important? What statement is the author making about society? About herself?

12 Example Example: I am from the sound of pencil Sketching frantically till end I am from the smell of school supplies When Crayons and glue blend I am from the crashing wave Relentless and so pure. I am from a city silhouette My only true allure I am the smell of morning breakfast As the family awakes in day. I am the morning dew so sad As I watch them drive away. Create an “I am poem”.. Defining who you are except instead of directly telling me who you are, explain it to me by your surroundings.
