Safety and Rules of the Lab

Lab Safety Rules Part of this PowerPoint has been taken from the power point of…. Tim Baker, Adam Kueltzo, and Todd Katz….former NCHS students And from Lyndon B. Johnson High School Science Web Site

Safety Symbols Know safety symbols They appear in your laboratory activities They will alert you to possible dangers They will remind you to work carefully

Use Your Head Exercise Caution and Good Judgment Follow all instructions given by the teacher Notify the teacher immediately regarding any accident or unsafe areas

Use Your Head Read lab instructions ahead of time Always follow lab procedures exactly Never do an unauthorized experiment

Protect Yourself Eye Safety Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices or if possibility of flying debris If you wear contact lenses let your teacher know Glasses, sunglasses, etc. are NOT considered safety goggles!

Protect Yourself Eye Safety In case of emergency in which a chemical goes into one’s eye, use the eyewash station Flush in water for 15 mins. and notify the teacher

Protect Yourself Proper Attire Keep all long hair tied back Do not wear loose clothing that could catch on fire Foot wear that completely covers the foot is required

Protect Yourself Hand Safety If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes Wash hands after every lab Handle glassware, sharp tools and heated containers carefully

Protect Yourself Hand Safety

Sharp Objects W h e n u s i n g k n i f e s o r o t h e r s h a r p o b j e c t s a l w a y s w a l k w i t h t h e p o i n t s Always cut away from fingers and body Always carry sharp objects with points and tips facing down and away Never try to catch falling sharp instruments Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles

Electrical Safety Only electrical plugs are to be placed into an electrical outlet Unplug electrical equipment after use Keep all electrical cords, wires, and appliances away from water

Physical Safety Handle all equipment carefully Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it Push all stools in out of the way Keep books picked up out of walking aisles

Heating Safety Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames Never look into a container as you are heating it Never point the end of a test tube being heated at yourself or others Never heat in a closed container

Heating Safety Never leave a heat source unattended Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling Do not place hot glassware directly on lab desk or in cold water

Chemical Safety Read all labels twice before removing a chemical from the container Only use the type and amount of chemical instructed to use Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher. To smell a chemical, use the wafting technique Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so

Chemical Safety Transfer chemicals carefully! Keep lids on chemical containers when not in use When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water Consider all chemicals dangerous

Animal Safety Only handle living organisms with teacher permission Always treat living organisms humanely Wash your hands after handling animals

Respect the life of all laboratory specimen They gave their life for your education Treatment of Specimen

Plant Safety Do not eat any plants in lab Wash your hands after handling plants Tell your teacher of any plant allergies Like any organism, plants should be considered possibly harmful

You Should Never… Enter store room unless given permission Take any chemicals from lab or store room Touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until instructed to do so

You Should Never… Eat or drink in the lab Use lab glassware to eat or drink out of

Engage in…. – practical jokes – horse play – rough house You Should Never…

In case of an emergency… Know the locations of: –fire extinguisher –fire blanket –body shower –eyewash station –first aid kit If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher’s help

Remember to… Stay at your work station Maintain a clean work area Read and follow all directions Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period Dispose of waste products according to instruction

Activity Safety Scenarios Game: A lab scenario will be displayed on the board. Your table will be given 30 seconds to write down as many lab rules violations that can be found using the information from class and the information from the Lab Safety Rules sheet. Talk quietly because you do not want the neighboring tables to steal your rules violations.

Scenario #1 The teacher was not in the room yet. Jake began weighing chemicals, touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he rubbed it.

Scenario #2 Heather and Jennifer were absent the day before when the investigation was discussed. While they shared a muffin, they gathered the materials and watched their classmates to see what to do, and then they began the investigation.

Scenario #3 Sam was heating a test tube. He didn’t put on his safety goggles since he was wearing scratch resistant glasses. He slanted the tube away from his work area, but toward students on the opposite side of the lab bench.

Scenario #4 Cindy broke a test tube. She carefully picked up the broken pieces and place them carefully into the garbage can.

Scenario #5 The sleeve of Susie’s long, over-sized sweater caught fire. As her lab partner laughed, Susie ran over to show the teacher.

Scenario #6 Mike and Erin has a lot of chemical left over from their investigation. They dumped the chemical into the sink and then left the water running in the sink as they left class.

Scenario #7 Jim and Jane were going to be late for their next class so they just left their lab station with spilled solution on the counter, and they did not put away their materials.

Scenario #8 Gina did not pay attention when the teacher was explaining were the lab safety equipment was. She thought to herself, “Oh, I’ll never need that.”

Scenario #9 Tim and Tina did not label their beakers of solution. Tim suggested to Tina that they start sniffing them and try to match with someone who had labeled their beakers of solutions.

Scenario #10 Henry asked a classmate across the lab bench if he could borrow a writing utensil. His classmate threw the utensil, knocking over a beaker of chemical. Henry cleaned the spilled material with paper towel.

Scenario #11 John made a weak solution of sulfuric acid for his acid rain project. He did not tighten the lid on the concentrated sulfuric acid jar because he knew Sara was going to use it, as well. When Sara grabbed the jar, the lid came off, and acid spill all over her chest and stomach. While she cried, “I’m melting, I’m melting,” the majority of her classmates either laughed or ran out of the room. John, being a quick and smart thinker, found a corresponding jar of concentrated base and threw it on Sara.

Take out a sheet of paper and write down the lab safety violations that are illustrated in the picture and by whom.
