Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar Frame Relay Frame relay is a virtual circuit WAN technology Designed in late 1980’s and early 1990’s Operates at a high speed (1.544 Mbps and recently 44.376 Mbps) Operates in just physical and data link layers It allows a frame size of 9000 bytes It has error detection at the data link layer only Frame Relay Contt…

7
Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar Frame Relay operates only at the physical and data link layers. Note:
8
Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar Frame Relay does not provide flow or error control; they must be provided by the upper-layer protocols. Note:
9
Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar FRADs To handle frames arriving from different protocols, Frame Relay uses a device called Frame Relay Assembler/Disassemble (FRAD) A FRAD assembles and disassembles frames coming from other protocols to allow them to be carried by Frame Relay frames

Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar VOFR Frame Relay network offers an option called Voice Over Frame Relay (VOFR) that sends voice through the network Voice is digitized through PCM and then compressed. The result is sent as data frames over the network
12
Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar LMI Local Management Information (LMI) is a protocol added in early 2000 to the Frame Relay protocol to provide more management features e.g. A keep alive mechanism to check if data are flowing A multicast mechanism to allow a local end system to send frames to more than one remote end system A mechanism to allow an end system to check the status of a switch Provides data transmission Synchronization
