3 What is a global citizen?

4 Oxfam’s Global Citizen is aware of the wider world and has a sense of his or her own role as a world citizen respects and values diversity has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally is outraged by social injustice

5 Oxfam’s Global Citizen participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from the local to the global is willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place takes responsibility for his or her own actions

6 Amnesty International Started by Peter Beneson in 1960 Letter-writing campaign for Portugese students sentenced to 7 years in prison Freedom of expression: the right to speak, write, or publish one’s opinions

7 Human Rights In groups of 3, come up with at least 5 fundamental human rights that you think everyone should have Write them down, and be prepared to present them to the class

8 Universal Declaration of Human Rights right to life, liberty, security of person right to education right to participate fully in cultural life freedom from torture, cruel inhumane treatment or punishment freedom of thought conscience and religion the right to a standing of living adequate for health and well being

9 Declaration of Rights of the Child Children have the right to: affection, love, and understanding adequate nutrition and medical care an education full opportunity for play and recreation a name and nationality special care if handicapped

10 Declaration of Rights of the Child priority for relief in time of disaster learn to be a useful member of society and to develop individual abilities be brought up in a spirit of tolerance and friendship enjoy these rights regardless of race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin

11 Definitions active resistance: to resist actively, often through militant means sanctions: military or economic intervention, such as halting trade or aid, by a group of nations to pressure another country to change policies that violate international law passive resistance: non-violent political action NGO: a non-governmental organization that does international public works and lobbies for people’s rights around the world

12 Let’s Learn About Some Issues In the same groups of 3 as before, each group needs to fill 3 roles  Reader  Recorder  Speaker Each group will grab an article from the teacher  the reader will read it to their group  The recorder will write down any notes about the article, and the answers to the questions  the speaker will read the answers out to the class Questions to answer  What is the article about?  What is the human right in question here?
