1
What is Life? Levels of Organization Activity (Theme: Organization) Characteristics of Living Things (Theme: Unity)
2
How are living things organized?! Emergent Properties! –What does this term mean? –“A whole is greater than a sum of its parts” –Apply to levels of organization activity.
3
Using your books… Summarize the levels of organization activity by finding a chart similar to the one on the right in your book (that you will sign out today!)
4
Brainstorm first… What must so-called living things do to be living?
5
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Cells
6
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Reproduction
7
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Based on Genetic Code
8
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Growth and Development
9
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Need for Materials and Energy
10
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Response to Environment
11
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Maintaining Internal Balance
12
What characteristics do the things in these pictures have in common? Notetaking Tip --- list descriptions of pictures in your notes Evolution
13
Characteristics of Living Things Made of cells Reproduce Based on a genetic code (DNA) Grow and Develop Need Materials and Energy Respond to Stimuli (Environment) Maintain an Internal Balance (homeostasis) Evolve/Adapt over time
14
To clarify… To each characteristic add your own notes based on the in-class discussion and book reading.
15
To practice… For homework, answer the virus question. This is a good test type question to see if you know and understand the characteristics of living things!
16
Sample in class additional notes… Made of cells: –Unicellular –Colonial –Multicellular Reproduce: –Asexual Budding and Binary fission Vegetative propagation--Mrs. K’s Backyard –Sexual –Can one organism use both?
17
Continued… Based on a genetic code: –DNA –RNA Growth vs. Development Need materials and energy: –Autotrophs Photoautotroph –Heterotrophs Consumers & Decomposers Respond to stimuli: –What fits in here that defines animals? –How are plants different?
18
Finished! Maintain an Internal Balance Evolve –Can we come up with an accurate definition of this? –Can individual organisms evolve? –What allows for evolution?
19
Did you get it?!?! Read about viruses in your book (Ch. 21 Sect 1) It is a debate among scientists as whether or not to classify viruses as living things. Citing examples from the reading, justify whether or not you the scientist would classify viruses as living things! A “advanced” answer would show a clear connection between today’s notes and understanding of virues!
