Bill Gates By Eli De Carteret
2
Background Bill Gates real name is William Henry Gates III. He was born on the 28 th October 1955 in Seattle, Washington. His parents wanted him to be a lawyer. He had a competitive upbringing, with his parents saying “there was always a reward for winning and there was always a penalty for losing. His school when he was in 8 th Grade did fundraisers in order to buy computers. Bill Gates was interested in the computer and programming of it, and decided that is what he wanted to do. He was even excused from Maths to program on the computer. This is where he started using programming, when he built a tic-tac-toe game on the computer which allowed players to play against the computer. Bill Gates and some of his friends started working on creating software. To gain free time on the PDP-10 system, they exploited bugs in operating systems, which saw them banned from the Computer Centre Corporation. At the end of this ban, they asked CCC if they could find the bugs which could be exploited in a swap for computer time. Bill Gates used this time to research source codes for programs, which is where he started fully gaining experience in how to code his own programme. After seeing this talent which Bill Gates and his friends possessed in the world of computers, Information Science, Inc. hired them to write a payroll program. Bill Gates then went on to write the school computer program. This program was what is now the register for making sure students are in their class. He then went on to serve as a congressional page in the US House of Representatives. He went to Harvard College and University in 1973 after passing his SATs with a score 1590 of 1600. Whilst he was at Harvard, him and Paul Allen created Microsoft. Bill Gates then dropped out of Harvard University in order to create his own company, in the way of Microsoft. Microsoft then went on to create Windows computers. He was the executive between 1975 and 2006 for Microsoft after spending these years developing different parts of Microsoft in order to get it to the dominant status which he felt it deserved.

Company and personal prices/ Net Worth As one of the worlds leading entrepreneurs, both him and his company, as you can imagine, are very wealthy. Microsoft is said to be worth $69.96 billion. Which is £42.72 billion in English monetary terms. However, this still isn’t even in the top 10 biggest net worth companies in the world, the biggest being Wal-Mart being worth $469 billion which sells retail items. Most of the other ones in the top 10 are oil and gas companies. This is £286,394,850,000 in British Sterling Pounds. Bill Gates, however, is said to be worth $136 billion which is 83,048,400,000 in British Sterling Pounds.

Skills and mindset The skills which I feel he possesses are: The desire to never give up/ determination. He never gave up when he was creating Microsoft and made sure that his company was number one at all costs. He also had a goal set which he was sticking to and anybody who got in the way or wasn’t doing what he wanted was either fired or overtaken by Bill Gates. He was also a problem solver as he managed to solve all the programming which needed to be done. He was also a decision maker who lead the team as when he was making Microsoft into what it is today, he spent 31 years making sure that it was made into a massive company by leading it to the goals which he had pre-determined and didn't accept anything less than what he required doing to the standard which he wanted it. This is along with the other skills of self motivation, teamwork, communication, commitment and IT skills etc.

Do I have these skills The skills I feel I possess are: Determination because I don’t tend to give up easily on something which I feel that I can do to the standard which I want. Goal setting. I feel that I set goals and then I keep them because if a deadline is due, I hit it with no problems and try to get the work I turn in to the best standard required of me. This also links in with the determination too as if I have set a goal, I am determined to get that goal completed, even if it means having to postpone other events such as social aspects. I feel I am also a problem solver as if there is a problem or an issue, I attempt to resolve it the best that I can and if I can’t then I try and learn how to solve the problem and then try again on how to fix the problem at hand. I feel I am a decision maker too as I do try to make the best decisions I can. I will work with a team to show teamwork and show leadership, which both require decision making, along with my own individual decisions. I try to make the decision which will benefit both me and everyone else who is attached to the decision and try to make the best decision possible at all times. This is along with the other skills of self motivation which feel I possess as I need to be self motivated to get my work done and in on time to a distinction standard, as well as other self motivating tasks. I feel that I have good communication skills as I can talk to people quite easily. However, this isn’t one of my strongest aspects all the time as on some tasks, I do prefer to do it individually, but I am working on making my conversational skills better, it depends on the task and scenario in which I am in at the time. I feel I have good commitment skills as this is similar to the self determined bullet point. If a task needs to be done or a deadline needs to be hit, I work hard in order to get it done and I have the commitment in order to turn down other invites to get the task done. I feel I possess good ICT skills as I know a lot about them and spent a lot of extra time, outside class time, at primary and high school in order to learn more about computers and try to gain experience in how to use them properly. I have also learned a lot about them from problem solving. When I or other people have a problem with computers, I research how to resolve the problem and if I can’t do it myself, I find someone who does know and find out how to do it from them by observation. I feel I am organised most of the time. The majority of the time I have a to do list with the dates which something needs doing for and my self motivation, determination and goal setting skills all work together in order to get it done. My presentation skills are pretty good as I had to do a lot of presentations at both high school and Sixth Form. I am working on making this skill better too as I feel this can be improved.

How can I develop and improve these skills From the skills which I laid out in the previous slide, I feel I can improve and develop the skills by: Determination- I don’t feel that I can improve this as when something needs doing, I do it and don’t give up until it is done. Goal setting- I don’t feel I can improve this either as I already have everything I need to do written out, mixed in with my organisational skills, so I set a goal with a date that I want it done for and I do it. To improve my conversation and communication skills, I have tried to talk to more people than I usually would do at college and when I was at Sixth Form, this way, I will have more people to talk to and therefore, I will have more conversations and this will build up my communication skills. I have also taken up refereeing so I need to talk to the teams managers along with other referees who I have never spoken to before and draw up conversations with. This is improving my communication skills too. I also did Psychology in Sixth Form and watch a lot of Psychology programs to do with body language. This will allow me to improve my communication skills as I can read how people are really feeling more easily through the body language they are showing so that I can tell what to talk about. I am still learning more about this outside of college so that I can continue to learn. The only way I can improve my ICT is to continue reading up on computers and research about them, along with continuing with every day tasks and seeing if a problem arises which I can learn through trial and error. My presentation skills are improving by me working with a team and creating presentations on project days when we had to present our Educational games, along with me working on the work to hit deadlines for college which is presenting my work for a teacher so that they can mark it and understand it.
