Big Question: What does it mean to be mentally and emotionally healthy? Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down Does it mean that a person does not have any mental disorders? Does it mean that a person has a high self- esteem? Does it mean that a person is able to express and manage emotions in a healthy way? Does it mean that they are able to cope with life’s challenges?

Mental Health is more than being free of disorders it is the ability to accept yourself and others, proper display of emotions, and the ability to deal with demands and challenges in daily life.

Why is mental and emotional health important? Our mental health affects our physical and social lives. Reflect: Can you think of a time when you were under a lot of stress? How did you feel physically? Did any of your relationships change?

Being mentally unhealthy affects your physical health because you may eat an unhealthy diet, lose sleep, or not participate in regular physical activity. It can also make you more irritable and distant from friends and others who you have a relationship with.

Stress

Stress Facts Forty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints. The lifetime prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50%, often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace. Stress costs American industry more than $300 billion annually.

What is Stress? Stress is the reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands. – Stressors are anything that can cause stress.  Can you think of any stressors in your life?

Eustress vs. Distress English Lesson – What is a prefix? Eu-means good Dis- means negative Eustress then means good stress- it is a response to stress that is healthy, or gives one a feeling of fulfillment or other positive feelings Distress then means negative or bad stress-it is a response that is unhealthy which is caused by overwhelming anxiety and other stressors

Body’s Response to stress When the body is presented with the a stressor the autonomic nervous system releases hormones called adrenaline and coritsol Adrenaline-is a quick releasing hormone (emergency hormone) makes the body and mind alert Cortisol-is a slowly releasing hormone that helps to replenish energy supplies and helps us to remember important things

3 stages of stress response 1) Alarm 2) Resistance 3) Fatigue Alarm-The body is presented with a stressor, then the ANS releases adrenaline to prepare body and mind to quickly react. Flight or Flight! Resistance-the body reacts to the rush created by the heightened response then reacts to the stressor. This is when the cortisol is typically released Fatigue-body becomes tired and lowers your level of activity. Both the mind and the body become exhausted.

Stress and relationships Acute and chronic stress a can have many symptoms that can have adverse affects on a person’s relationships It can cause irritability which often times leads to arguments and fights. It can also lead to a person to close themselves out from family, friends, and significant others.  Talking about stress can lead to secretion of oxytocin hormone which causes more positive perceptions and a positive mood

Chronic Stress Chronic Stress-Stress associated with long-term problems beyond their control. With the long-term activation of the stress response system and over exposure to the hormone cortisol it can have negative effects on many or the body’s vital systems. This can put the body in increased risk of many health problems. These problems include-anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep problems, weight gains, memory and concentration problems
