JOBS THAT INVOLVE USAGE OF TYPOGRAPHY AND CALLIGRAPHY Graphic artist (what do they do?) Cartographer (?) Court document clerk/ clerical workers Typesetters (newspaper/magazine) Engraver (tombstones, mailboxes, signs, etc.) Film/television editing (credits) Comic book or anime artists

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS Calligraphy has been used for many centuries and was even relevant as seen here in this exert from the book of Matthew in the original Orthodox Bible. These pages were often decorated with gold and beautiful colors to enhance the calligraphy.

LANGUAGE A Vietnamese Calligrapher working on flags for Tet (Vietnamese New Year). Many cultures to include Japanese, Chinese and Korean still use calligraphy in daily writing.

ADVERTISING Typography is used in Advertising and marketing. Notice how the words that are relatable to the subject matter are being used to form the shape of the company logo.

STUDENT WORK: BEGINNINGS OF A MODIFIED ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT Always sketch out your project in pencil 1 st. Add all details before putting marker to the page. Be unique. Make your Art personal to you. There is only 1 you. Embrace that concept in this class. Surprise me in your Art.

REPETITIVE LINE IN COLOR OVER CURSIVE WRITING Option #2: In pencil, write your name in 1 of the styles of lettering in the packet (or cursive). Trace your name in marker, using different colors over and over until the page is filled.

AGENDA Study over the handout that shows different styles of lettering. Decide which type of lettering project you want to do based on your ability, preference and personality. Always begin in pencil. Why? Sketch out your name, initials or whatever style you choose. Always outline in black marker to get a clean edge prior to coloring. Once you have completed all drawing and details… begin adding color. Marker is best for this project.
