But large projected increase in number of households. More people living alone. Ageing population  more households with elderly people and fewer households with children. Geographic differences – more people live alone in the cities, and more families in areas outside the cities.

8 General Register Office for S C O T L A N D information about Scotland's people Research on Alternative Sources The long-term vision in the production of population statistics was put forward by Office for National Statistics in 2003: Integrated Population Statistics System: census, administrative and survey data linked at an individual record level to create a single comprehensive population statistics database which is updated overtime. 9 General Register Office for S C O T L A N D information about Scotland's people As part of this research program GROS: Undertakes studies of administrative sources and surveys, currently not used in the production of population estimates, to assess the potential for these sources in the production or quality assurance of population estimates Works to develop in house capability to match data sources at record level Aims to learn from research projects linking census records with other administrative registers: Health and Ethnicity, Scottish Longitudinal Study. 18 General Register Office for S C O T L A N D information about Scotland's people Vital events - processing Information from registration process is checked and edited Occupation coding (SOC2000) Cause of death coding (WHO, ICD10) – using automated coding software from USA Wide range of geographical area codes are assigned using postcodes e.g. wards, council areas, constituencies, NHS board areas

Answering enquiries on all areas of statistics. Providing advice on the use of 2001 (and earlier years’) Census data. Co-ordination work for the Division including GROS website.

21 General Register Office for S C O T L A N D information about Scotland's people Dissemination & 2001 Census Output The Registrar General’s Annual Report. 2001 Census reports and occasional papers including recent reports on migration, travel and Gaelic language. Census data on website www.scrol.gov.uk and on CDs/DVDs. Handled around 1,700 requests for data in 2005/06. Statistics section of GROS website will have a new look soon, with topic pages for each demographic area.
