Arctic Virtual Learning Tools NCM Arctic co-operation program project, 2009 - 2011 Rovaniemi, 2010 www.uarctic.org
2
Background The project joins together the University of Arctic, which educates northern people in both rural areas and in cities in all Arctic eight countries and Arctic Portal, which is the website that hosts among others IPY, the Arctic council working groups Caff, Pame and ACAP, International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), Sustainable Arctic Observation Network (SAON), the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR).
3
Background The funding for the project comes from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Arctic Cooperation Program (2009 650 000 DKK, 2010 500 000 DKK and option for year 2011). Goal: to improve access to education in the Arctic region through online learning tools that support the existing programs and curriculum of the University of the Arctic. This would be achieved by the development of new learning resources (Atlas, community square, open textbooks) and online learning environments. These new resources would serve to improve access to education and the standards of living of Arctic residents, especially in smaller communities.
