What country was Adams negotiating with? The French! Why? Because the French were harassing American ships!

How did the French respond to the American’s desire to meet? They sent a letter requesting a bribe of $250,000 in order to meet. What did Adams do? Released the letter to the public, changing the French names to XYZ

To gain support for War with France if it came to that. What was the Outcome? The French backed down and negotiated.

Alien and Sedition Acts What was the “Alien” part of the Acts? Changed naturalization laws From 5-14 years to become a citizen Could be deported with due process What was the “Sedition” part of the Acts? Could be arrested for speaking out against the government
