3. Korean War Background After the allied victory in WWII, Korea was split along the 38 th parallel between the U.S. and USSR. It would eventually become a free and independent country. When it was time for elections, the two super powers supported different leaders, leading to the split of the North and South. The US supported the South, while the USSR supported the North.

4. Start of Korean War Northern troops invaded the southern half of Korea. The UN saw this as an act of aggression and demanded the North withdrawal. The North was resilient and Truman sent U.S. air, land and sea troops to South Korea. Truman appointed General Douglas MacArthur as the Supreme commander of the war.

5. North Korean Advancement At first North Korean forces were able to advance quickly with little resistance and had pushed the South Korean army and smaller American troops to Busan. UN forces made a counter offensive attack at Incheon and North Korean forces fell back. When Chinese communists joined North Korean forces they counterattacked and recaptured Seoul.

7. End of War The unpopularity of the war led the public to elect Dwight D. Eisenhower as president because he pledged to end the war. The U.S. and North Korea had different opinions and negotiations were tough so Eisenhower had to threaten nuclear war. 8. Aftermath There were four million total deaths. 33,600 Americans 16,000 UN 415,000 South Koreans 520,000 North Koreans 900,000 Chinese Half of Korea’s industry was destroyed and one third of all their homes were pillaged.

9. Current Korea Despite the Signing of the armistice the North and South remain divided today. Both the North and the South say they would like peaceful reunification and their goal is “one Korea”. In 2010, North Korea had reactivated its missile program, stirring the South’s military programs in reaction to this potential aggression. The future of Korea remains to be seen…
