Periodic Training Directive states two objectives: Periodic training shall be designed to expand on, and to revise, some of the subjects referred in section 1 of Annex I. to update the knowledge which is essential for the work of the driver, with specific emphasis on road safety and the rationalisation of fuel consumption.

Periodic Training Other questions Are individual driving lessons (eco-driving) mandatory? Recommended by Safe EU Driver project Different standard = different costs. Unequal competitions? Minimum course length: 7 hours Problem in e.g. Sweden: Big distances to training centres. Drivers arrive afternoon – have 4 hours and 3 hours next morning.

When asked, Commission said no Recommendation: Only if identity of driver under training can be guaranteed Is a final test allowed? If a driver do not pass a final test, he is not allowed to drive Most of us do not want a decisive test

Periodic Training Approved training centres Directive text unclear: In order to be approved a training centre must be able to offer both initial and periodic training can be approved for either initial or periodic training Difficult question – different conditions among EU nations Directive text Annex 1, 5.2.3: The programme of instruction must cover the subjects in the list in section 1.

Every driver will wait till last year Almost 10 years can pass between PT Impossible for training centres to cope with Drivers attend training after criteria: When driving license expire Not all countries have expiring driving licenses After driver’s birthday

Periodic Training The future We need a common minimum standard for periodic training Present situation is creating unequal competition Should include mandatory individual eco- and defensive driving The report of 2011, mentioned in Article 13, should also focus on Periodic Training
