Class Room Expectations 1.Be RESPECTFUL. 2.Be RESPONSIBLE.

If you do not meet an expectation Take responsibility form Sentences Call home/email parents Lunch Detention After school Detention Office Referral  Consequences will be issued based on severity of infraction.  Consequences listed are not necessarily in order of how they will be issued.

Rewards Daily:Praise Table Points Marlin Tickets Weekly:Marlin Ticket Store

Planners/Tuesday Folders Please check planners DAILY. All important papers will be sent home, on Tuesday, in Tuesday folders. The students must have their planner DAILY. – If a student does not have his or her planner or it is not written in, he or she will receive a conduct mark on that day. – This will be our primary form of communication for behavior. – Please note that this is a ONE way communication log, if you need to tell us something please email us or send a separate note.

5 th grade Academic Expectations Homework – Math: ASTROS will be given on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday  Note: Thursday night will be reserved for re-dos (anything less than a 70 maybe corrected),make up work, or work not completed in class during that week.

5 th grade Academic Expectations Failing Assignments – If a student fails an assignment (69 or lower), they may correct the assignment for a 70. – Assignments needing corrections will be received on Tuesday in Tuesday Folders and will be due by Friday of that week. To check grades follow the below instructions: - Go to www.alvinisd.net - Click on “For Families” - Click “TEAMS Parent Self Serve” - Click “New User” if you haven’t registered previously - You will need your student’s id

Math Academic Expectations  Fifth Grade Math Year at a Glance: – place value (whole numbers through the billions and decimals) – adding/subtracting – patterns/tables/ordered pairs – multiplication (up to 3 digit by 2 digit) – division (up to 4 digit dividend and 2 digit divisor) – fractions (Majority of 5 th grade math) – geometry – graphing, measurement, and probability.  As we progress through these units, we will continue to work on problem solving; using P.S.P. and the problem solving strategies.  The purpose is to show the students the way we use math in everyday life.

Math Academic Expectations  Everyday Items: The students know what is expected each day when they walk into my room - Planner - Astros Folder - Math Notes Spiral - Pencil/Red Pen  Daily Routine - Brace Map(P.S.P.),Thinking Map, Multiplication Chart - Check Astros, BAV - Everyday Counts - Lesson/Game

Math Academic Expectations  Grades - Class Work/Homework: Graded daily in their Astros folder or Math Spiral. - Make Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to pick up his or her make up work from me when he or she are absent. Every Thursday is Re-dos; the students can correct anything less than a 70. - Late Work: Work will be accepted up until the grading period cutoff for a reduced amount of points. - Grades/Missing Work: Updated every Friday and the student is made aware

Math STAAR The State of Texas Academic Assessments of Readiness (STAAR) is replacing the TAKS test as the state’s assessment tool. The test will be 48 questions long, with some additional (ungraded) field-test questions. The test will be timed this year. Students will have four hours to complete the assessment. The majority of the test will be problem-solving questions that incorporate operations. Not too many questions will be straight computation problems. This assessment, by all reports, will be much more rigorous than TAKS… on purpose. The state wants to have a more precise tool to show where our students are. The scope will be broad.

MAP Program for 6 th Grade MAP is the magnet academic program for junior high students in Alvin ISD. The program provides student with advanced curriculum in math and science. All students in 5th grade are given the AMA (Alvin Mathematics Assessment). Students have 50 minutes to take this test. Students scoring a 70 or higher will be pulled for MAP testing. The test given in the second round is the TOMAG test, and it is not timed. Both tests are mathematical assessments that focus on mathematical reasoning and thinking. There is really no way to prepare for these tests. If a student does not qualify for MAP, then their options include pre-AP and a regular math class as a 6th grader. To be placed in pre-AP, they must qualify based on the matrix (average, teacher recommendation, STAAR score, AMA score).

Math MAP Program If a student qualifies for MAP then: In math, the students complete 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math all while in 6th grade. In 7th grade, the students take Algebra 1 Pre-AP, which is a high school level course. In 8th grade, the students take Geometry 1 Pre-AP, which is also a high school level course. In science, they do not take high school level courses, but they do take an advanced curriculum in 6th and 7th grade, which allows them to focus on physics and chemistry (the more difficult high school sciences) while in 8th grade science.

Want to help? If you would like to lend us a hand here’s how: – Sign up to be a room parent. Can’t commit weekly? – Email us asking what we need at that time. – Sign up for a parent/teacher conference. – Donate supplies.

How to contact us: Email is the most efficient method of communication. – jskaria@alvinisd.net – smathew@alvinisd.net If not, please call us during our conference period. – 8:25-9:10281-245-3232
