Determining Disk Partition Options If you are performing a new installation, review your disk partitions or volumes before you run Setup. (For an upgrade, you will use existing partitions or volumes.) Both partitions and volumes divide a disk into one or more areas that can be formatted for use by one file system. Different partitions and volumes often have different drive letters (for example, C and D). After you run Setup, you can make adjustments to the disk configuration as long as you do not reformat or change the partition or volume that contains the operating system.

13
Determining Disk Partition Options If you are performing a new installation, Setup examines the hard disk to determine its existing configuration and then offers the following options If the hard disk is un partitioned, you can create and size the partition on which you will install a product in the Windows. NET Server 2003 family product by using the un partitioned space If the hard disk is partitioned but has enough un partitioned disk space, you can create the partition for your Windows.. If the hard disk has an existing partition that is large enough, you can install a product in the Windows.NET Server 2003 family on that partition, with or without reformatting the partition first. Reformatting a partition erases all data on the partition. If you do not reformat the partition but you do install a Windows.NET Server 2003 family product where there is already an operating system, the operating system will be overwritten, and you must reinstall any applications you want to use with the Windows.NET Server 2003 family product. If the hard disk has an existing partition, you can delete it to create more un partitioned disk space for a partition for a Windows.NET Server 2003 family product. Deleting an existing partition also erases any data on that partition.

15
Determining Which File System to select You can potentially choose among three file systems for an installation partition: NTFS, FAT, and FAT32. NTFS is strongly recommended in most situations. It's the only file system that supports Active Directory, which includes many important features such as domains and domain-based security. However, it might be necessary to have a FAT or FAT32 partition on a basic disk in an x86-based computer if you must set up the computer so that it sometimes runs Windows.NET Server 2003 and sometimes runs Windows NT 4.0 or an earlier operating system.
16
Determining Which File System to select NTFS has always been a more powerful file system than FAT and FAT32. Windows 2000, Windows XP, and the Windows.NET Server 2003 family include a new version of NTFS, with support for a variety of features, including Active Directory, which is needed for domains, user accounts, and other important security features.. FAT and FAT32 are similar to each other except that FAT32 is designed for larger disks than FAT. The file system that works most easily with large disks is NTFS. Note that file system choices have no effect on access to files across the network. For example, using NTFS on all partitions on a server does not affect clients connecting across a network to shared folders or shared files on that server, even if those clients run an earlier operating system such as Windows 98 or Windows NT.
17
Determining Which Licensing Mode to Select Per Seat Licensing Each Client Requires a CAL CAL Per Server Licensing Each Connection Requires a CAL CAL
18
Determining which licensing mode to select If you are unsure which mode to use, choose per Server because you can change once from Per Server mode to Per Device or Per User mode at no cost.
19
21
Choosing a Licensing Mode Products in the Windows Server 2003 family support 2 licensing modes: Per Device or Per User and Per Server. If you choose the Per Device or Per User mode, each computer or user that accesses a server running a product in the Windows Server 2003 family requires a separate CAL. With one CAL, a particular client computer can connect to any number of servers running products in the Windows Server 2003 family. This is the most commonly used licensing method for companies with more than one server running products in the Windows Server 2003 famil
22
Choosing a Licensing Mode In contrast, Per Server licensing means that each concurrent connection to this server requires a separate CAL. In other words, this server can support a fixed number of connections at any one time. For example, if you select the Per Server client licensing mode with five licenses, this server can have five concurrent connections. (If each client requires one connection, this is five clients at any one time.) The clients using the connections do not need any additional licenses. The Per Server licensing mode is often preferred by small companies with only one server. It's also useful for Internet or remote access servers, where the client computers might not be licensed as network clients for products in the Windows.NET Server 2003 family. You can specify a maximum number of concurrent server connections and reject any additional logon requests..

Determining Whether to Join a Workgroup or Domain Workgroup Domain SAMSAMSAM Single User Account Active Directory
24
Determining whether to join a workgroup or Domain A workgroup is a small group of networked computers that work together and centralized administration is not required. A workgroup has the following characteristics: *Resources, administration, and authentication of users are preformed on each computer in the workgroup. *Each computer has its own local Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database, which is the local security accounts database, A user must have a user account on each computer to which she or he wants to gain access. * There are 10 or fewer computers, These can be computers running one of the windows 2000 server product. but each has its own SAM
25
Determining whether to join a workgroup or Domain In windows 2000, a domain is a logical grouping of networked computers that share a common security database for storing security information. Security and centralized administration are important for computers in a domain. Characteristics of the domain: *Resources, administration, and authentication of users are centralized. There is only one directory database in windows 2000 that stores all of the user accounts for the domain. This database is called the Active Directory, A user needs only one domain user account in active directory to gain access to all shared network resources in the domain Domains are scalable. They can easily support a small group of computers to several thousand computers

Completing a Pre installation checklist *Verify that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements. For example, your hard disk should meet the minimum space requirements and preferably have a minimum of 2 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space. *Check all hardware (network adapters, video drivers, sound cards, CD-ROM drives, PC cards, and so on) for compatibility by checking the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). * Identify how you want to partition the hard disk drive on which you are going to install Windows 2000 Server. * Choose a file system that meets your requirements and provides the services you need. Choose NTFS unless you need to run more than one operating system on your computer. * Select a licensing mode. You can switch to per-seat from per-server mode after installation, but not to per-server from per-seat.
28
Completing a Pre installation checklist *Choose the type of network group (workgroup or domain) your computer will join. If you are joining a domain, you need additional information such as the domain name and the computer account name created for you. With an administrator account and password in the domain, you can create a computer account in the domain. * Determine whether to perform a new installation or upgrade an existing version of Windows NT Server. Windows NT Workstation and Windows 9x cannot be upgraded to Windows 2000 Server. * Select an installation method: Setup boot disks, CD-ROM, or over-the-network. Choose which components you need to install, such as Networking Services or Microsoft Indexing Service.
