2 Abjure: to reject, renounce
Much to Allen’s chagrin, Savannah abjured his offer at a lifelong commitment.

3 Acumen: keen insight Kristin’s acumen in regards to literary analysis was on full display when she took the assessments in English.

4 Blandish: to coax by using flattery
Kat tried to get Allen to agree to do her homework for her by some pretty obvious blandishment. Look at him. It worked.

5 Buffet: to strike with force
Winds buffeted the tiny sailboat, causing it to capsize shortly after this picture was taken.

6 Calumny: an attempt to ruin someone’s reputation by spreading lies
It was through the cruel calumny of teenage girls that Jessie’s high school career was cut short, when he was forced to drop out and begin selling thermometers out of a cup on street corners.

7 Conundrum: puzzle, problem
This small person is an absolute conundrum—one minute sweet and gentle, the other fierce and terrifying…she is a conundrum wrapped in a mystery covered in surprise and dipped in enigmatic chocolate.

8 Deride: to laugh at mockingly, to scorn
The vicious twins cruelly derided their friend, for not also being a twin. “Reject!” they screamed in unison.

9 Diffident: shy, quiet, modest
Kyle’s is a diffident young man in class, as demonstrated by the fact that he continually tries to disappear underneath his hood.

10 Dither: to be indecisive
Jon dithered in his choice between the two candidates for ASB—both were equally scary.

11 Effrontery: impudence, nerve, insolence
When asked to put their phones away, these two young ruffians demonstrated unbelievable effrontery and positively refused!
