Review solving linear simultaneous equations Understand the difference between a linear and a non-linear pair of simultaneous equations Learn how to solve non-linear equations where two terms are similar
3
When solving linear simultaneous equations, we can add or subtract to remove an unknown and solve. Example Solve the simultaneous equations below. ① ② ①
4
The example shown a moment ago was for a pair of linear equations. Linear means that no unknowns multiply each other or themselves. Check whether the equations below are linear. Yes No – It is multiplied by itself. Yes Try solving some regular non-linear equations with one unknown.
5
-4 positive 4 -4 5-5 9-9 11 -11 4 -4 7 -7 6 -6 5 -5 1
6
If we have a non-linear case where two terms are the similar (the coefficient doesn’t need to be the same), we can still solve through addition or subtraction. Example Solve the simultaneous equations below. ① ② ② x2② x2 ① - ② x 2 ②
