3 Objective Students will identify three states of matter using particle models.

4 Matter is:  Stuff that is all around you  Takes up space (volume)  Made up of particles (mass)

5 Properties of Matter  Matter has many properties  It tells us what things can and can not do  Does it move?  What color is it?  What is it used for?  What size is it?  What shape does it have?

6 Properties of a Pencil  Look at the pencil  Describe it to your neighbor Size Size Color Color What can it is used for What can it is used for Other Other

7 3 States of Matter  Solid  Liquid  Gas

8 Solid  Particles packed together  Closer the particles, the harder it is harder it is  Holds it shape  Particles can’t move much  Has the same volume  Example: rock

9 Liquid  Particles roll around each other other  Has no definite shape  Fills the shape of the container  Has the same volume  Example: water

10 Gas  Particles spaced far apart  Fills the container it is in  Has no definite shape  Has no definite volume  Example: air bubbles in soda or smoke coming from a train soda or smoke coming from a train

11 Activity  Get into groups of 4.  Choose a materials person to get the following: following:  a plastic container.  a bag of marbles  a handout for each student

12 1. What am I?  Put 6 marbles in your container. container.  Gently slide the container back and forth on the desk. and forth on the desk.  Share with your group what the marbles (particles) do. marbles (particles) do.

13 1. What am I?  Draw a picture of what the marbles look like on the hand-out. like on the hand-out.  Write down what you see on the hand-out.  Are the particles in a solid, liquid or gas? solid liquid gas

14 2. What am I?  Put 24 marbles in the container. container.  Gently slide the container back and forth on the desk. back and forth on the desk.  Talk to your group about what the marbles (particles) what the marbles (particles) do. do.
