Phases of Matter Physical Science Objective 5.03
2
Solid A solid is a substance that holds its shape
The particles that make up a solid substance have low kinetic energy and are packed tightly together
3
Solid Particles
4
Liquid A liquid is a substance that holds its shape in a container
The particles that make up a liquid substance have an increased kinetic energy and are able to spread further apart
5
Liquid Particles
6
Gas A gas is a substance that does not hold its shape
The particles that make up a gas substance have high kinetic energy and are able to move freely in the space available to them
7
Gas Particles
8
Phase Changes Substances change from one state of matter to another as heat is added to the substance The absorption or release of heat leads to a change in kinetic energy of the substances particles As the kinetic energy of particles changes the state of matter changes
9
Phase Change: Solid -> Liquid
As heat is added to a solid, the solid will begin to melt Every solid has a different temperature at which it melts. This temperature is called the melting point
10
Phase Change: Liquid -> Gas
As heat is added to a liquid, the liquid will begin to vaporize Every liquid has a different temperature at which it vaporizes. This temperature is called the boiling point
