3. Key Word: Mood Mood: mood is a literary element that evokes certain feelings in readers through words and descriptions. Mood is also referred to as the atmosphere of a poem, because it creates an emotional situation that surrounds the reader.

6. First Steps to finding mood in a poem Step #1 Read aloud the poem, “Abandoned Farmhouse.” Listen for the way that the poet uses words.

7. Step #2 Read the poem a second time. Look for the words that convey strong feelings. Highlight the “strong feeling” words.

8. Step #3 Ask yourself, what kind of effect do these words have? How do these words make me feel? On the back of your worksheet, make a list of all of the feelings that come to your mind.

9. Team Share of Mood words Compare your list with your team. Which words were chosen by more than one team member? Which words are very similar? Choose two words that describe how you felt when you heard and read the poem. Write each word in one of the boxes on the graphic organizer.
