www.cofret-project.eu Introduction Welcome to the COFRET Project COFRET is a collaborative research and demonstration project part-funded by the European Commission, which will deliver a methodology for the calculation of the carbon footprint along the full supply chain. COFRET Objectives To establish a complete GHG emission calculation methodology and framework in the context of complex supply chains based on available calculation tools for CO 2 emissions To cover all types of shipments at company level and aggregated level of transport and logistics To provide a methodology that is applicable for supply chains within the EU as well as in the global context To embed practical exploitation as a key element of the technical work programme to maximise the eventual

www.cofret-project.eu Premise Many initiatives have emerged that address the issues of measuring and reducing CO 2 emissions within various elements of the freight transport supply chain. These initiatives provide an extremely valuable starting point. However, there are many inconsistencies in approach: which greenhouse gases are taken into account which supply chain elements are taken into account which modes are considered Therefore a ‘neutral’ approach that aligns the best practice elements is required.
4
www.cofret-project.eu Approach work with the existing initiatives - close co-operation between the COFRET team and industry stakeholders develop a comprehensive methodology to be used in in-house and commercial applications test the methodology in real supply chain applications work to maximise the eventual uptake of the COFRET methodology
5
www.cofret-project.eu Review of Existing Resources and User Needs The first stage is now complete: To review and assess existing carbon footprint calculation methods, tools and databases To identify user needs, practices and experiences in the context of carbon footprint calculation To review future technologies and innovations relevant to freight transport carbon footprint calculation Current Progress
6
www.cofret-project.eu Review of Existing Resources Reviewed: 18 methodologies 38 calculation tools 12 databases 34 other resources (research projects, forums, communication channels) Compiled within COFRET ‘Deliverable 2.1’ : “Existing methods and tools for calculation of carbon footprint of transport and logistics”
7
www.cofret-project.eu User Needs Survey Consulted with: > 40 one to one interviews online survey e-mailed to > 400 valid e-mail recipients and completed by 62 Analysis completed January 2012

www.cofret-project.eu Existing Resources and User Needs Workshop Held 19 th January 2012: > 30 attendees detailed discussion and review outputs feed into methodology development phase
9
www.cofret-project.eu Methodology Development initial steps now underway workshop with methodology experts and tool developers scheduled for 15 th February 2012 will continue through to middle of 2012 subsequent step will investigate incorporation into supply chain management software, and development of a prototype for use in the COFRET case studies
