1 Major Battles of the Civil War
By: Danielle Bradley Major Battles of the Civil War

2 Background The Civil war started due to sectionalism and slavery. The first state to secede form the union was South Carolina. By February, 1861, there were 7 seceded states. The seven states adopted a provisional constitution for the Confederate States of America. They established their temporary capital in Montgomery, Alabama. Governors in Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania quietly began buying weapons and training militia units. When Lincoln was sworn into presidency he addressed the states about the need for peace. Apparently peace wasn’t what he got.

3 Battle of Fort Sumter April 12–13, 1861 was when it took place.
1st battle of the American Civil War. Took place in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The Confederate General attacked Fort Sumter at 4:30 a.m. after informing Robert Anderson at 3:30 a.m. that he would open fire in 1 hour. Robert Anderson agreed to a truce at 2:00 p.m., April 13, 1861.

4 First Battle of Bull Run
The public pushed Union General-in-Chief Winfield Scott to advance on the South before adequately training his small troops. The attack was on July 21 in Manassas Junction, Virginia The southern was victorious in this battle. There were 4,700 casualties in this battle. This battle convinced Lincoln and his administration that the war would be a long and costly affair.

5 Battle of New Orleans It took place on April 25–May 1, 1862.
It took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was the Union’s victory. There were luckily no casualties. The Union owning New Orleans was an event that had major international significance. Battle of New Orleans

6 The battle of Shiloh is also known as the battle of Pittsburgh Landing
That was a major battle in the Western Theatre of the American Civil War. It took place on April 6-7, 1862. It was fought in Hardin County, Tennessee. About 15,000 people died in this battle. Battle of Shiloh

7 Battle of Gettysburg Took place on July 1-3 1863.
Although the Battle of Gettysburg did not end the war, or did it attain any major war aim for the North or the South, it remains the great battle of the war. Here at Gettysburg on July 1, 2, and 3, 1863, more men actually fought and more men died than in any other battle before or since, on North American soil. The Union won this battle. The Confederacy never recovered from their loss in this long battle.

8 Result The war ended and the Union won. Since they won, slavery was banned and the South did eventually re-join the Union.
