Graphics A graphics program allows you to combine pictures and text in many different ways. Features – General Level Draw graphics Enter Text Common Tools Alter Tool Attributes Scale Graphic Rotate Graphic

Draw You draw a graphic on the screen using a: Mouse Track Pad Graphic Tablet Keyboard Text A graphic package also allows you to enter text anywhere on the screen. STANDARD GRADE COMPUTING IS FANTASTIC!

Serif Draw Toolbar Pointer Rotate Node Pencil Paintbrush Pen Line Quick Shapes Text Tool Insert Picture

Pointer Allows the user to select, move, copy, and resize objects. Rotate Allows the user to rotate objects around a centre point in a certain number of degrees. Node Allows the user to manipulate the shape of objects. For example, a rectangle can become a curved rectangle Pencil Choose this tool to sketch lines using a freeform pencil.

Paintbrush Choose this tool to paint with either one of a selection of preset brushes or with your own customized paintbrush. Pen Allows the user to creates a series of connected line segments (which may be curved or straight) using a series of "connect the dots" mouse clicks. Line Choose this tool to create straight line segments. Quick Rectangle Click to display the QuickShapes flyout menu, then select one of the available QuickShapes. Text Tool Choose this to add text to your document or edit existing text.

Common Toolbar Set of tools that are common to most drawing graphics packages Shapes (circle, rectangle, polygon) Free hand (pencil, paintbrush, pen) Selection (arrow) Fill (colour wheel, paint bucket)

Colour wheel Allows the user to change the colour of a shape or text Fill Colour Line Colour

Common Toolbar (cont) Text – add text to your document or edit existing text. Zoom

Alter Attributes Changing the properties of a tool. The way the shape is displayed, for example, changing the line thickness or fill of a shape. Line thickness changed to 6pt Pattern has been given to the fill

Scale Graphic Changing the size of the graphic by making it larger or smaller. Rotate the Graphic Turn the whole graphic through a certain number of degrees.

Crop Graphic - Credit Is to reduce the size of a graphic by cutting parts from the edges. The unwanted parts of the graphic.

Paint and Draw (Credit) Graphics packages can be classified into two main types: Paint (bit mapped) – Windows Paint Draw (vector) – Serif Draw Paint Produce pictures by changing the colour of tiny dots called pixels. 11 =1 =0

Features of bitmapped graphics: Each pixel can be changed individually i.e. colour Edit a bit mapped graphic by deleting pixels anywhere on the image. Bit-Mapped images require a large amount of storage space, as every pixel is stored including white space. Once they are enlarged to much, they look unnatural and blocky.

Draw Draw packages work by producing objects on the screen. The store images by their description. The shape of graphic objects Their position on the screen Their attribute such as fill, line colour Example Line thickness = 5pts Fill pattern = red diagonal brick Co-ordinates and radius of position

Features of vector graphics: Take up less storage space Do not lose their quality when resized Objects can be grouped to form larger objects User cannot edit individual pixels Complex objects with many layers can demand a lot of storage space. Grouped Image You can easily turn a multiple selection into a group object. When objects are grouped, you can position, resize, rotate, or shear all the objects at the same time.

Resolution The amount of detail which can be shown on a screen. Measured in dpi – dots per inch. Small pixels mean high resolution Large pixels mean low resolution

Calculate the size of an image. – 25 Jan Black and White bitmapped Image – Credit = 2666 x 1764 = 4702824 pixels = 4702824 bits/8 – putting the answer into bytes – divide 8 = 587853 bytes/1024 – put the answer into Kb – divide 1024 = 574.075 Kb Image 2666 pixels 1764 pixels
