2 Introduction Urban small scale turbines operate in gusty conditions. Warwick Wind Trials ∙26 small scale turbines ∙168 950 hours logged ∙Capacity factor of 0.85% (4.15%) Turbines need to be designed for gusty conditions. Developing a new concept wind turbine designed to operate more effectively in gusty wind conditions.

7 Research Significance Lower cost per energy yield due to possible; Higher power yield in gusty conditions. Absolute pitch control – absolute control. Variable Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) which has the following benefits: High starting torque. Low cut-in wind speed. Constant turbine speed for various wind speeds. Same turbine can be used for high or low shaft speeds.

9 Future development Wind tunnel testing on aerofoil profiles and segment designs (Cl/Cd). Wind tunnel testing for turbulent conditions. Continue reviewing and testing scaled concepts. Design and build full scale ( Ø 3m) turbine with segment control for proof of concept.
