6 Student Activities Policy
CSU and individual Sports and Societies have a common law ‘duty of care’ to participants. If this is not implemented then the Students’ Union or Captain/Presidents can be regarded in law as negligent and subsequent legal action can be taken. This policy acts to ensure that this does not occur. This policy is guided and bound by:- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations 1999 Safety in Sport regulations. The policy can be found on CSU website (

Chester Students’ Union recognises it has the power to reduce the disadvantages experienced by people by making its services responsive to the different needs of individuals and groups. If you ever feel that you or a member of your club has experienced discrimination at any level please inform a member of the students’ union team. As a member of the committee you have responsibility to your club and members to ensure that discrimination does not occur and everyone feels welcome.

27 Spot Checks Chester SU are going to evaluate your sessions. Surprise!
We will evaluate you on all the above from first aiders, coaches, turning up early to complete health and safety checklist. Feedback

28 Disciplinary All sports and societies and their members must adhere to Student Activities Policy. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action. Student Activities Manager deals with disciplinary action. It is recognised that teams within clubs run separately, and therefore are individually treated for disciplinary procedures. The punishments are severe to act as a deterrent, and CSU are trying to enable student activities to take place in as safe an environment as possible. Sports and Societies have the right to appeal by stating their reasoning in a letter addressed to the President.

29 Disciplinary Example OFFENCE:
Failure to submit a health and safety checklist within 24 hrs of the activity taking place. RESULT: Team/Society receives an official written warning. IF AN ADDITIONAL OFFENCE REPEATED WITHIN SAME ACADEMIC YEAR: Automatic one month suspension.

30 Ask? If you have any questions or queries please ask a member of Student Activities Team.
