SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT – JEFF CALICO PROBLEM STATEMENT OVATION – “TO CELEBRATE LIFE” OVATION A community is defined in many different ways. In fact, in the 1950’s there were already ninety-four discrete definitions of the term community. Traditionally, a “community” is considered to be a group of interacting people interacting and living in a common location. If you look at the term from a biological standpoint, it can mean a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment. I would like to try and create through a design methodology inspired by the Ovation site itself to reinterpret or at least explore the idea of a community. The idea is to have a group of individuals living in a common area that they are proud to call home, that drives interaction between residents and also with the surrounding environment. The dynamic force behind the design is the site itself and the experience that a member of the community would have within; be that living, visiting, shopping, dining, or just experiencing what the development has to offer. I envision the residents and the surrounding area to be excited about what Ovation is about. Life to the fullest is the key to understanding what it can offer. No matter the stage of life, income level, or interests, the Ovation development will have accommodations for everyone. That is what motivated me when exploring the site and the tremendous possibilities abound. The etymological research and investigations I undertook coupled with a look at biomimicry examples led me to a design concept which helped me push the Ovation site design through from rough concept to where we are today.

DESIGN INSPIRATION THE MERGING OF TWO FORCES TO BRING LIFE DESIGN BASIS INSPIRATION: (ETYMOLOGY) Confluence - "to flow together," from com ‐ "together" + fluere "to flow." Structure - struere "to pile, build, assemble," related to strues "heap," from PIE *stere ‐ "to spread, extend, stretch out" Archon - "to begin, rule, command," 'rule, beginning,' and arkhos, 'ruler' " [Watkins].
