Purpose of Back to School Night View presentation on how to best support 9 th Graders Experience their classes and schedules Get a sense of your children’s teachers Ask general questions about the class

For Specific Questions E-mail or phone teachers Schedule a meeting with an individual teacher (have the student present) Contact guidance to meet with all teachers Contact jocelyn_martin@hcpss.org – 9 th grade ITLjocelyn_martin@hcpss.org Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences Make sure you leave time to get from 1 classroom to another if you are seeing multiple teachers

We (Parents and Teachers) Have What it Takes… To help our 9 th Grade Students be Successful Teachers and Parents work together as a cohesive support system for students Teachers, students, and parents work together to ensure progress

9 th Grade Team Mission The Team’s Goal is to: Maintain a support network for all 9 th graders Foster communication among teachers Attend meetings to discuss concerns related to all 9 th graders (review grades and attendance data)

What We Do For Students Provide students with the skills they need to succeed in high school and beyond Provide a smooth transition between middle school and the rest of high school Provide ongoing support for struggling 9 th graders

School-wide Academic Supports SOAR (Monday and Thursday) students sign up Monday morning in Student Services School Tutoring Before school Hawk Time Every Monday, students are encouraged to meet with their teachers for extra help or to make up missing work

Supporting the Transition Balance between providing support, structure, and freedom All students are different and will require different levels of support Allow students to be independent

Support Academics Read the same texts and discuss them Ask them what they are learning or even the most interesting things they have learned Encourage students to read their work aloud to you as an editing technique Help them to develop and maintain an organizational system

Empower Students to Self Advocate Monitor their own progress Students check grades (or check together) Students check canvas for assignments Make sure students know why they got a grade Confer with teachers about grades or conflicts Help students practice what they will say Help students compose an e-mail If still not satisfied, parents and student meet with the teacher

Encourage Students To get Involved In and out of school activities Clubs – look and listen for announcements SGA to have a voice in the school (even if not an officer) Try new things (sports & activities) Use the school’s Academic supports ask for help when needed sign up for tutoring

Support Students Stay involved in their lives Monitor their clothing for school (you still have control over what they wear) Ensure they get enough sleep Make sure they eat well balanced meals Check in with them often (do not text during school day if possible) Allow them to make mistakes

What Students Want You to Remember High school is hard Will make mistakes (bad grades) Will forget homework occasionally Trust them to make good decisions Be specific when you compliment them Don’t compare to siblings or other students Attend events, but don't acknowledge them Ask about their day, but don’t expect answers
