Related Information 1) The Christmas season: For Christians, the Christmas season lasts from Christmas Eve till after New Year’s Day or, especially in England, Epiphany (on the 6 th of January). Commercially, the period is much longer. Stores usually begin to decorate their departments and to promote a sales campaign for Christmas in late November. Special attention is paid to the shop windows designed to attract Christian shoppers.

If a store provides free samples of some of their products, it is likely that more people will shop there. Samples, usually of new foods and drinks, are given with the understanding that if you like them, you will buy them. 7 UNIT THREE UNIT THREE 6 AAt the beginning of the passage, the author wonders whether there are some people who will take advantage of this privilege to sample the puddings free of charge in a certain store with no intention of making a purchase. Then in the following several paragraphs an old gentleman of this kind is pictured vividly in front of our eyes and in the concluding paragraph the narrator displays a sense of loss, for his sincere offer to help hurts the man awfully who has never visited the store ever since. On the whole, the passage is well-arranged and instructive. 3. Text Structure Analysis

In the adverbial clauses introduced by before, the subject can be left out if the subordinate clauses and the main clauses share one subject. 2) I have often wondered whether some people, who had no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this privilege. The underlined part is an attributive clause. 3) He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushed into his wrinkled face. The underlined part is in the subjunctive mood. 5.
