Unit 1 - Sports Fall 2013 Mrs. Cole 8 th grade science

Unit 1 – Sports Standards S8P2 Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy. ▫A. explain energy transformation in terms of the Law of Conservation of Energy ▫B. explain the relationship between potential and kinetic energy.

Unit 1 – Sports Standards (con) S8P3 Students will investigate the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects. ▫A. determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration. ▫B. demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object in terms of gravity, inertia and friction. ▫C. demonstrate the effect of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, wedge, screw and wheel and axle) on work.

Unit 1 – Sports Standards (con) S8P5 Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. ▫A. recognize that every object exerts gravitational force on every other object and the force exerted depends on how much mass the objects have and how far apart they are.

Unit 1 – Key terms (due 8/23) 1.Position 2.Speed 3.Direction 4.Velocity 5.Acceleration 6.Balanced force 7.Unbalanced force 8.Friction 9.Gravity 10.Work 11.Efficient 12.Mass 13.Weight 14.Free fall 15.Lever 16.Inclined plane 17.Pulley 18.Wedge 19.Screw 20.Wheel 21.Axle 22.Simple machine

▫ TOPIC : Sports ▫ KEY LEARNING : There are different forms and transformations of energy. There is also a relationship between velocity, acceleration and the motion of objects. ▫ UNIT ESSENTIAL QUESTION : 1. What are the different forms and transformations of energy? 2. What is the relationship between velocity, acceleration and the motion of objects and how is it measured? Unit 1: Sports Student Learning Map

▫ CONCEPT #1 : Motion of objects ▫ LESSON ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S) : 1.When is an object in motion? 2.How do you know an object’s speed and velocity? 3.What kind of motion does acceleration refer to and how is it calculated? 4.How do balanced and unbalanced motions impact each other? ▫ VOCABULARY : speed, position, direction, velocity, acceleration, gravity, unbalanced force, balanced force, inertia, friction, mass, rest Unit 1: Sports Student Learning Map

▫ SPEED  Speed is a type of rate that tells you the distance the object travels per unit of time  Units of time can vary (per minute, per second, per hour)  Speed=distance/time S8P3 Students will investigate the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects. A. determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.

▫ VELOCITY  Speed in a given direction  Example:  Speed: 25 km/h  Velocity: 25 km/h westward S8P3 Students will investigate the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects. A. determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.

▫ ACCELERATION  The rate at which velocity changes.  Refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed, or changing direction S8P3 Students will investigate the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects. A. determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.

▫ Slope  The steepness of a line on a graph  Slope = rise/run S8P3 Students will investigate the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects. A. determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.
