3 WHAT IS CULTURE? A HUMAN SOCIETY’S TOTAL WAYS OF LIFE. THE LEARNED AND SHARED CUSTOMS, VALUES, SYMBOLS, INSTITUTIONS AND MATERIAL OBJECTS OF A SOCIETY. IMPACT OF CHANGES VIA EDUCATION, TIME, TRANSMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE OF CHANGE. MODERN U.S. HISTORY SHOULD BE DESIGNATED AS MODERN U.S. CULTURE. 1917 TO THE PRESENT ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CHANGES THAT HAVE MADE US WHO WE ARE TODAY AS A SOCIETY, COUNTRY AND CULTURE.

4 AMERICAN VALUES 1. INDIVIDUALISM- personal independence and self- reliance. 2. ACHIEVEMENT-talent, motivation, work, merit, competition. 3. MATERIALISM- comfort, standard of living, more stuff than your neighbor. 4. EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY- free to choose (life is a journey, not a destination (Aerosmith) 5. SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY- make things better, solve problems. 6. NATIONALISM/SUPERIORITY - America is #1, everyone else is first place losers.
