Stress and Time Management Rosivach

What causes you stress? Now talk to your neighbor

Objectives Learn a few quick strategies for helping you manage your time more effectively. Learn a technique called visualization to help reduce your feelings of stress.

Time Management Time stress can come from the feeling of not having enough time to do everything. Time stress can also come from the feeling that you don’t have enough time to have fun.

Finding time Many days you have more time than you think you do, you just don’t use it well. – Have you ever said, I’ll wait to do that until I have enough time? – Have you ever though there is no point in studying now because I won’t actually get anything done?

Ten minutes at a time Ten minutes is really enough time to get something meaningful done. Studying in smaller chunks of time keeps you feeling fresher and more attentive to the material

Chart you time Try using a calendar program to keep track of what you actually do with your time. – Try 10 minute intervals – Be honest After two weeks go back and highlight areas where you could have found more time.

What kinds of things interfere with your studying? Now talk to your neighbor

Little Rewards Instead of feeling guilty about doing the things you want to do, build them into your schedule. At first it will seem weird to put facebook or talking to your girlfriend or eating dinner with your family on your calendar.

Little Rewards When you focus your studying, and put the distractions aside you get better quality studying and better quality time for fun. Instead of feeling guilty for taking time away from studying call it your reward for doing a good job.

Priming You can use your unconscious mind to help you stick to your study plan. We will use a technique called priming to help.

Priming Procedure Close your eyes and think about the place you will be studying. Include as many details as you can. – What colors do you see? – What objects are in the room? – What is the temperature? When you can really see it put your head down on the desk but keep your eyes closed

Priming Procedure Now I want you to think about what you will be doing right before you study. Again, include as many details as you can. – Where were you? – Who were you talking to? – Did you get something to eat? What did it taste like? Now open your eyes and sit up

How priming works When you get into the situation you just imagined your sub- conscious will begin telling you that it is time to study. This can help you stick to your schedule.

Stress and Visualization What we just did was called a visualization technique. Your body responds to the training you give your mind. This gives you the power to help regulate your stress response.
