UNIT OBJECTIVES 6-DESCRIBE how humans impact (+/-) biodiversity Add on to each OBJECTIVE every night as REVIEW! 7-IDENTIFY how biodiversity is increased / decreased
3
FAST PLANTS -# plants use toothpicks to # plants hashmarks for plant # -count trichomes on plants – RECORD – 1 per group -RECORD OBSERVATIONS quantitative – data table qualitative - descriptions -determine if your bottle is HAIRY or NON-HAIRY
4
1.3 LAB: SCIENTIFIC METHOD & BLOOD TRICHOMES: -Trichomes are HAIRS found on fast plants. -They are found above the cotyledons and on the stalk of the true leaves. -We are going to COUNT the # of trichomes on the LOWEST true leaf. Fast Plant Ecology: Counting Trichomes Cotyledons TRUE LEAF
5
FAST PLANTS RECORD OBSERVATIONS -quantitative – data table # plants [total] # each color stem # each color leaf # true leaves/cotyledons on a “typical” plant that represents ALL measure height of plants -qualitative – descriptions PICTURE - drawn or photo all & detailed of a “typical” plant DESCRIBE - what plants look like

YEAST POPULATION COLLECT a sample of yeast population: -put 1 drop of yeast mixture on a slide -add 1 drop methylene blue to drop of yeast LOCATE yeast cells under microscope: -find under low power—focus -turn to medium power—focus DRAW what your cells look like in your journal -show the groupings/clusters of cells -estimate #s in a single view RECORD a picture if you can get a good shot

POGIL ROLES 1-FACILITATOR / TIMEKEEPER keep group ON TASK / FOCUSED takes care of TIME MANAGEMENT makes sure ALL VOICES in group are HEARD 2-SPOKESPERSON COMMUNICATES group QUESTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS w/ INSTRUCTOR ENSURES ALL MEMBERS have had the OPPORTUNITY to RESPOND before asking ? ENSURES that EVERYONE in group AGREES on WHAT QUESTION to ask PRESENTS CONCLUSIONS of the group to the class, as requested 3-SCRIBE [ANSWER KEY- lead discussion of GRADING/REV] TEAM NOTE-TAKER / TEAM “GRADER” LEADS team in REVISIONS 4-QUALITY CONTROL / CHECKER GUIDES consensus-building process: group must AGREE on RESPONSES VERIFIES that ALL individual responses are CONSISTANT ENSURES that ACCURATE REVISIONS happen during/after class discussions
