1 Chapter 9: Coaching

2 Introduction Coaching is increasingly used mainly for professional development to indicate a positive change in individuals and to encourage the transfer of knowledge from the coach to the individual. Organizations and companies find coaching highly beneficial for the career growth of their employees so coaching has been applied by many entities in their organizational practices. At the workplace, coaching is used when the management finds that there are working individuals who need to enhance their potentials to perform better in their jobs and to be more productive.

3 Coaching Generations in the Workplace Understanding the inherent differences between generations and addressing the fundamental work expectations of members of these generations will assist managers in more effectively meeting the needs of employees: -The Silent Generation -The Baby Boomer Generation -Generation X

4 Coaching Generations in the Workplace The savvy manager will approach employees with an awareness that people in each of the three generations think about work differently. Therefore, each generation should be coached differently.

5 Coaching With Compassion: Inspiring Health, Well- Being and Development in Organizations Coaching is a “facilitative or helping relationship with the purpose of achieving some type of change, learning, or new level of individual or organizational performance” Compassion is defined as an “interpersonal process that involves noticing another person as being in need, empathizing with him or her, and acting to enhance his or her well-being in response to that need” Compassion is an interpersonal process with the following elements: Noticing another person's need Feeling empathetic concern Actively responding to enhance his/her well-being

6 Coaching With Compassion: Inspiring Health, Well- Being and Development in Organizations Coaching with compassion is a process for the coachee’s development and growth with a focus of development of Ideal Self and on their strengths The effect of coaching is highly favorable since coaching with compassion will arouse positive emotions and healthy psychophysiological systems, helping a person become more open to new possibilities, grow, and renew themselves. As a result of the effects of emotional contagion, coaching with compassion is likely to have an impact that extends beyond the coaching relationship to others in the organization, leading to favorable outcomes at the individual, dyad, group, and organizational levels

7 Exercise and Practice Routines SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face. Used in a personal context, it helps you develop your career in a way that takes best advantage of your talents, abilities and opportunities Use the worksheet to identify the Strengths you possess, the weaknesses that limit you, the opportunities that exist for you to take advantage of, and any possible threats against which you should make plans
