What is the purpose of Health & Safety?

H&S ensures that in the short/long term, an individuals health does not deteriorate and that accidents (or the chance of an accident occurring) are entirely avoided through control by assessing the danger and effectively reducing the risk….

Health and Safety at Work Act – Main Duty of the Employer “To ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of employees and other people such as pupils, visitors and contractors ‘so far as is reasonably practicable’”

Employers Duties – The Health and Safety at Work Act Provide and maintain a safe place of work and a safe and healthy working environment. Provide and maintain safe plant and systems of work. Make arrangements for the safe use, handling, storage and transport of work articles and substances. Provide information, instruction and training. Consult with the workforce on h&s matters. Prepare and maintain a safety policy.

Employees Duties – The Health and Safety at Work Act Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Not to deliberately or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided for health and safety. Co-operate with their employer and others to meet statutory requirements.

Employees Duties – The Health and Safety at Work Act Use equipment etc. in accordance with training and instruction. Inform employer (Headteacher) of - any serious and immediate dangers - any problems with health and safety arrangements

H&S hazards in the school situation? LEGIONELLA Naturally occurs in rivers, lakes, ponds etc. Most likely route to infection by breathing in water droplets. Optimum temperature between 37°C to 46°C. Temperatures of 70°C + kills the organism instantly. Insignificant reproduction below 20°C. Reproduces in stagnant water supplies.
