7H SPREADSHEETS This week: Spreadsheets- functions and formulae
2
STARTER Check your emails This week I have made another workbook for you to complete. Open the file attached to the email I have sent you. Complete the starter activity on the first tab. Please let me know if you missed last lesson.
3
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Differentiate between label, value and formula Implement formulae confidently in Excel Explain the use of the SUM and AVERAGE functions SOME: Apply knowledge of formulae and functions to help model solutions to scenarios
4
LABEL, VALUE, FORMULA Mini-plenary: Someone give me an example of:- A label A value A formula
5
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORMULA? =1A+3G CELL REFERENCES USE COLUMN LETTER, ROW NUMBER =A1+G3 REWARD POINTS!!!
6
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORMULA? =AA10÷A10 WE DON’T USE ÷, WE USE /! =AA10/A10
7
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORMULA? W10-Z13 ALL FORMULAE BEGIN WITH = =W10-Z13
8
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORMULA? =A6xA7 We use * for multiply, not x =A6*A7
9
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORMULA? =A1+A2+A3+A4+A5 Use functions such as SUM to make formulae shorter. =SUM(A1:A5)
10
RULES FOR FORMULAE Formulae always start with the equals symbol = We use * to multiply not X! We use / to divide, not ÷ Functions such as SUM and AVERAGE can help us write shorter formulae.
11
FUNCTIONS SUM is the function we use to total a list of numbers. A volunteer to show how we would work out the total of the numbers in column D!
12
FUNCTIONS AVERAGE – what is an ‘average’? How do we work this out in maths? What is the average of the numbers in row 7? A volunteer to show how we would work out the average of the numbers in row 7.
13
MAIN ACTIVITY 1.Finish the Starter Activity tab if you have not yet completed it. 2.Move onto the “SUM and AVERAGE” tab. 3.Ask the person next to you if you need help, else ask me. 4.If you finish, move onto the “Modelling #2” tab. Only use the ‘help’ buttons if you are really stuck!
14
MODELLING Modelling is the process of designing a computerised solution to a real-world problem or scenario. Another volunteer needed! Bessy has 3 cats and 1 dog and spends £5 a week on her pets. Albert has 0 cats and 2 dogs and spends £10 a week on his pets. Jill has 9 cats and 1 dog and spends £23 a week on her pets.
15
PLENARY “Quiz your classmates” Remember our learning objectives: Differentiate between label, value and formula Implement formulae confidently in Excel Explain the use of the SUM and AVERAGE functions Apply knowledge of formulae and functions to help model solutions to scenarios
16
GOODBYE! Homework will be emailed to you and put on the learning gateway
