Accelerated Reader provides a diagnostic check of your computer and quick links for free downloads of any missing plug-ins.plug-ins Some emergent-reader titles have quizzes with sound; quiz questions can be “read” to the student. Speakers are necessary to use this component. Quiz results are displayed immediately as a TOPS Report. You will need a printer if you wish to print them.

What you read over the summer is completely up to you! Choose from your favorite titles, characters, authors, and genres. There are over 116,000 titles with Accelerated Reader quizzes! There are Reading Practice Quizzes, Vocabulary Practice Quizzes, and Literacy Skills Quizzes, although not all types of quizzes are offered for every title. You can find out if the book you wish to read is in the Accelerated Reader database by logging on to the Parent Link and searching by title, author, or genre. Additional information about each book is also listed in the Parent Link.Reading Practice Quizzes Vocabulary Practice Quizzes Literacy Skills Quizzes Parent Link “I want more guidance!” Within the Accelerated Reader Parent Link there are Quick Search, Advanced Search, and Collections tabs that takes you to a list of award-winning books.Quick SearchAdvanced SearchCollections Books can also be filtered by ATOS Book Level and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to help you narrow down your search.ATOS Book Level Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

Making the most of your summer means that your family can create challenges that are best for you. Summertime is a time for families, so during the summer, families will design their own reading program and incentives. Have a family meeting and decide on goals for your personal program, and mini awards and celebrations as each goal is achieved. Make a chart or list, and post it in a highly visible place, such as the kitchen refrigerator.goalschart It’s fun to celebrate with friends, so on Saturday, August 22 nd, from 11:00- 1:00 we’ll have a Participants’ Picnic at Bur-Mill Park. Families will bring their own picnic lunches to the playground behind the pool and enjoy fun and games with other summer readers. Top readers will be announced and certificates given. See you there! 13 TWI ZPD ATOS TOPS Report Interest Level Literacy Skills Quizzes Recorded Voice Quizzes Reading Practice Quizzes Vocabulary Practice Quizzes I’m ready to read! “What Do Those Words Mean?” A Guide for Parents

TWI stands for “TO”, “WITH”, and “INDEPENDENTLY”, and relates to the way a student read a book. TWI “Read To” means the book was read to the student. “Read With” means there was shared reading. “Read Independently” means the student read alone. A student indicates at the beginning of an Accelerated Reader Quiz in what way the book was read. There is no scoring difference due to the type of reading. I’m ready to read! Need more help?

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation. It’s important for children to read with a high degree of comprehension and within their ZPDs. ZPDs should be adjusted based on the needs of your child. ZPD I’m ready to read! Need more help?

ATOS book levels are reported using the ATOS™ readability formula and represent the difficulty of the text. For example, a book level of 4.5 means that the text could likely be read by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader during the fifth month of school. Every book that has an AR Reading Practice Quiz is given a point value. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book (ATOS readability level) and the length of the book (number of words). I’m ready to read! Need more help?

A TOPS Report prints automatically after a child takes a quiz to give you feedback on your child’s understanding of the book and shows cumulative data for the designated period. TOPS I’m ready to read! Need more help?

Interest Level Just because a child can read the words in a book doesn’t mean the content is appropriate. The interest level of the material must be considered. Interest level is based on content—a book’s themes and ideas—and indicates for which age group a book is appropriate. The chart shows which grades fall into each interest level. 19 Recorded Voice Quizzes are designed for beginning readers and students learning English. They are professionally recorded by a narrator who reads the quiz questions and answer choices as they appear on screen. I’m ready to read! Need more help?

Literacy Skills Quizzes are designed to give information on specific reading skills. Questions are randomly generated from a 36- or 60-item bank resulting in 12 or 24 quiz questions. Due to item-bank technology, Literacy Skills Quizzes can be taken up to three times. Quiz questions are based on 24 specific, higher- order reading comprehension skills from state standards, basal reading series, and standardized tests. I’m ready to read! Need more help?

Reading Practice Quizzes are the most common type of assessment in AR. The purpose of these quizzes is to determine whether your child has read a book, to measure his literal comprehension of the book, and to provide immediate feedback. Each Reading Practice Quiz consists of 5, 10, or 20 multiple- choice questions depending on book level and length. They are available in English, Spanish, and Recorded Voice formats. I’m ready to read! Need more help?

Vocabulary Practice Quizzes measure a child’s command of vocabulary words encountered while reading. They are designed to reinforce vocabulary acquisition, assist with individualizing vocabulary instruction, and generate your child’s interest in words through authentic, in-context literature experiences. Quizzes include 5, 10, or 15 words from a particular book as well as review words from previously read books. Vocabulary Practice Quizzes are only available in the Renaissance Place™ versions of Accelerated Reader. I’m ready to read! Need more help?
