Health Literacy- What does that mean?

In order for students to reach a maximum level of health literacy, students need to be skilled in seven different areas in addition to being knowledgeable about health facts.

CORE CONCEPTS-(CC) STANDARD #1 Showing relationships Relating the framework of a skeleton to that of a wooden framework of a house Making factual conclusions Determining that helmets should be worn when riding a bike to help the skull protect the brain Learning Facts learning the names of the bones

ANALYZING INFLUENCES- (INF) (STANDARD #2) Who influences you?

DECISION MAKING- (DM) (STANDARD #3) Identify the decision to be made. Identify/demonstrate options and possible consequences State the decision Evaluate/reflect on the decision

GOAL SETTING- (GS) (STANDARD #3) Write a clear realistic goal Make a plan for meeting that goal Evaluate and adjust the plan if needed

SELF MANAGEMENT- (SM) (STANDARD #3) Demonstrate habits that contribute to health Identify strategies to avoid or manage unhealthy or dangerous situation Demonstrate specific first aid and safety techniques

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION- (IC) (STANDARD #4) Use appropriate and effective verbal and nonverbal strategies - eye contact- appropriate tone - body language- attentive listening

ADVOCACY- (AV) (STANDARD #5) Take a clear stand for a health choice Use information to support the choice Be persuasive
