Alcohol has the largest death rate out of all other drugs Disorders caused by alcohol have increased over the past 6 years Null Hypothesis: the ethanol exposure will have no effect on the short term memory of Drosophila melanogaster. Alternate Hypothesis: The Drosophila exposed to ethanol before training will have impaired memory and the flies exposed to alcohol after training will not have damaged memory. The control group will form short term memory The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the effects of alcohol exposure on short term memory in drosophila. AlcoholShort Term Memory Short-term memory is stored in the α/β mushroom body neurons Olfactory training This diagram shows how alcohol effects the brain This graph shows the results of the two different groups. The chpd flies’ short-term memory didn’t last as long as the control group Comparison Between Control and chpd Drosophila Need Knowledge Base Literature Review Purpose Hypothesis Moore, 98 LaFerriere, 07 AbstractGoesHere The Heat Box A model of the heat- box used to train short-term memory Results Time interval results This diagram shows the process of short term memory in the brain Deaths From Disease Figure 1 Figure 3 Figure 4 Figure 5 Figure 6 Figure 7 Figure 8

Wild Type Drosophila Control N=950 Alcohol Before N=800 Alcohol After N=850 Exposed to Alcohol for 5 minutes Trained using olfactory Exposed to Alcohol for 5 minutes Tested 5 hours later Methodology Results Performance index used to see if learning occurred Performance Index: (Correct-Incorrect)-.5/.5 x100 Testing Chamber Flies are lowered between the familiar and unfamiliar scents and are given 4 minutes to choose Training Chamber Flies are shocked while simultaneously being being pumped an odor. ControlAlcohol Before Alcohol After Figure 9 Figure 10 Figure 11Figure 12 Results are put through the performance index with the flies that moved to the unfamiliar scent are correct and those that stayed in the middle or moved to the familiar scent were incorrect Results are put through the performance index with the flies that moved to the unfamiliar scent are correct and those that moved to the familiar scent were incorrect and those that stayed in the middle were discounted

Ethanol beaker Air pump Alcohol Exposure Exposure chamber The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the effects of alcohol exposure on short term memory in drosophila. Results demonstrated that alcohol exposure before and after had similar results. When graphed with out the undecided flies results appeared similar with the before and after groups varying by a slight percent Discussion LimitationsConclusion Future Studies Bibliography Flies are exposed to 200 Proof ethanol for 5 minutes before or after training Figure 13
