What is the difference between BULLYING and an argument or conflict between friends?

What is Bullying? Bullying is different from the typical disagreements or arguments between friends or classmates. It’s bullying if: – One person is hurting or harming another with words or behavior – It is being done intentionally – The person being hurt has a hard time defending themselves from the behavior – The kids are doing it for more power – “Power” can include such things as being older, being physically bigger or stronger, having more social status, or when a group of kids “gang up “ on someone

What should you do if you see a student being bullied? Tell a trusted adult Use the tipline Don’t laugh and join it Get help (The situation may dictate what has to be done)

What should you do if you are being bullied? Tell a trusted adult Talk to an adult you trust. Don’t keep your feelings inside. Stay away from places where bullying happens. Stay near adults and other kids.

Why do students cyber-bully other students? ◦ anger ◦ revenge ◦ frustration ◦ entertainment ◦ because they are bored ◦ too many tech toys ◦ Overwhelmingly they say “It is a Joke” ◦ Encouraged by friends ◦ It is anonymous (feel powerful) ◦ Promote own social status ◦ Misunderstood e-mail

Can you prevent being cyber-bullied? Give example ◦ Don't give out private information such as passwords or PINs ◦ Use netiquette. Be polite online and others tend to do so. ◦ Ignore anyone who gets angry online ◦ When something doesn’t seem just right, ( it probably isn’t) leave the site or chat room.

What do you do if you are cyber-bullied? ◦ Tell a trusted adult ◦ Don’t open messages from people you don't know ◦ Don’t open or read messages from cyber-bullies ◦ Don’t react to the bully ◦ Don’t send it on, if you do read it ◦ If it is at school, tell a trusted adult at school ◦ Block the bully ◦ Report cyber-bullying to ISP’s ◦ If you are threatened, inform the SRO or police
