DO NOW: What do you want to learn for the mid-term? Lesson: Review how you can connect essay ideas to formulate a cohesive essay Example: From Macbeth Group work: Groups will come up with 3-5 pieces of text evidence Share out: 10 minutes Exit pass: Do you have any other concerns about the mid-term?
4
Make sure you stick to your claim/thesis Make sure you claim says what you intend on defending/proving Connect each text with a transition sentence—try to use a sentence rather than one word Connect all texts in the conclusion Make comparisons between texts when possible
5
Include your textual evidence in the form of SPECIFIC DETAILS you choose to paraphrase Read over your essay and make sure you fully prove your claim Did you summarize or stick to developing your theme? This is not a book report –DON’T SUMMARIZE EACH BOOK WITH NO DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR CLAIM
6
Check spelling, grammar, fragments, and run-on sentences Be specific—generalization will receive a point deduction The essay should be NO LESS than 5 paragraphs possibly more Be sure to include a strong opening and conclusion
7
Example: Macbeth—POWER, CORRUPTION, AND LEADERSIP Upon hearing Malcolm will become king after Duncan, Macbeth struggles with the concept of becoming king. He tells Duncan to his face he is honored to be fighting for him; however, internally he is realizing that in order to become king Macbeth will need to get rid of both Duncan and Malcolm. This shows Macbeth’s desire for power and leadership which leads him down a path of corruption because he feels compelled to act on what the witches told him. REPEAT 4 MORE TIMES FOR EACH TEXT—YOU MAY USE QUOTES BUT REMEMBER YOU NEED TO KNOW THEM FOR THE EXAM
8
Is there further you need for the mid-term? How can you connect the texts in your essay?
