Before we get started Introduction This seminar will be basic hands-on experience Does everyone have a laptop and a camera? Just to check - who has: Digital Movie Creator cameras? Webcam (with Stop Motion Animator)? Still image camera? Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010

Teaching animation to a whole class I found that teachers had lots of inspiration of how to integrate it into their literacy, science, topic, assemblies etc. But were anxious about how to teach a whole class with equipment they were unfamiliar with Step one is to get familiar with the equipment Then the best way is to plan a project, including making the characters, set and props, and taking a morning to do the filming Best options are to have groups of 3 or 4 children or to have an adult assigned to each group of 5 or 6 Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010

(Let’s take a quick look at three different options) Digital Movie Creator Camera Main Advantages: - easy for children to use - number of frames and seconds can be seen - can delete the last frame taken Main Disadvantages: - 3 grabs need to be taken manually of each frame Demonstration Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010
5
Webcam Main Advantages: - cheapest way of providing cameras - grab rate can be set beforehand Main Disadvantages: - error frames can’t be removed during process (although this can be done later in Movie Maker) Demonstration Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010
6
Still Image Camera Main Advantages: - most classrooms have one anyway - very high image quality Main Disadvantages: - have to actually touch the camera to take a picture - can’t play back the animation as you go along (Note: Still images have to be uploaded to a folder and imported directly into Windows Movie Maker) Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010

Time to have a go! Grab 3 frames per shot Take about 60 frames (4 seconds) Play back Save on your hard drive There is a basic set and props between two people – teamwork is essential using two different cameras at the same time! Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010
8
Time to share! Bring laptops to front to share on IWB Discussion time Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010

Putting it all together (if only we had time!) Import into Movie Maker Record a narrative Add title and credits Save ‘as a project’ or ‘save movie’ Where to find help... Animation Room in Fronter (helpsheets, website links, examples) Thank you Animation in the Classroom Primary ICT Conference 2010
