1 Guess What Fact: This diamond is made up of one of the most beautiful materials in the world-diamond. Diamond is a clear, sparkling crystal made up only carbon atoms. The Structure of Atoms

2 Inquiry Launch Lab Think it Over Questions:
How can you make different things from the same parts? Using the given paper clips, toothpicks, and string try to create things that use at least 1 item, but no more than 5 of each kind. Think it Over Questions: What do the objects you made have in common? In what ways are they different? What effect do you think increasing or decreasing the number of items will have on the identity of the objects you created?

3 Home Learning Continue to work on ABC Book Project. Letters A through F due Monday. Due Friday of this week Structure of the Atom Review Questions page 219 #1-10.

4 Part 1 Lecture Topics. parts of an atom
Part 1 Lecture Topics *parts of an atom *size of an atom/scientific notation

5 What is an atom? Atoms are what make up elements
Elements are naturally produced by the Earth Periodic Table of Elements is a table that shows the properties of elements like atomic number, atomic symbol, and atomic mass.

6 The Parts of an Atom According to the Modern Atomic Model, the atom has a nucleus that holds the protons and neutrons and then has an area space around it called the electron cloud where the electrons orbit in all directions. Each subatomic particle has its own charge

7 Science Use Vs. Common Use
The Science use of the word Charge is different than its common use In science, the word charge means the electrical property of some objects that determines whether the object is positive, negative, or neutral. Its common use means to make a purchase with a credit card

8 Subatomic Particle Charges
The basic structure of all atoms are the same Protons have a positive charge Neutrons have no charge Electrons have a negative charge The atom’s nucleus has a positive charge The overall charge of the atom is 0 (the positive charge of the protons cancels out the negative charge of the electron)

9 Electron Cloud Electrons are so tiny and move so quickly that scientists are unable to know their exact location This is the cloud of space where electrons are most likely to be moving around in

10 Electron Energy Electrons that move in the parts of the electron cloud that are closest to the nucleus have MORE ENERGY Electrons that move in the parts of the electron cloud that are far away from the nucleus have LESS ENERGY

11 Class Work: Structure of Atoms Review Questions Part 1
1. Describe the Modern Model of the Atom by drawing and labeling the protons, neutrons, electrons, and electron cloud. 2. Explain why the nuclei of atoms always end up with an overall positive charge? 3. Why is the exact location of an electron not possible to know? What did scientific research of the atom result in about this? 4. What is the relationship that energy shares with electrons? 5. Write the mass of each subatomic particle in scientific notation Mass of a Proton: grams Mass of a Neutron: grams Mass of an Electron: grams
