6 Flexible Grouping “Middle School students are members of heterogeneous, interdisciplinary teams designed to include all achievement and ability levels. The teachers on the teams make decisions about the groups within their teams and utilize a variety of grouping strategies throughout the year” SMS Parent Handbook and Curriculum Guide.

8 English Language Arts Standards Reads and comprehends a variety of grade level texts Analyzes the elements of literature to demonstrate comprehension Writes with focus, organization and supporting details Uses standard English conventions in writing, revising and editing Applies research skills

9 Math Standards Applies number theory concepts, divisibility rules, primes, and factors Solves addition/subtraction/multiplication/division problems involving whole number and decimals Identifies, analyzes and tesselates geometric figures based on properties Compare, add, subtract and multiply fractions Determines equivalencies of fractions Solves measurement problems using formulas Solves problems using tables, graphs, models and other algebraic methods

10 Social Studies Standards Describes the exploration of North America Analyzes the development and settlement of the 13 Colonies Describes the causes, battles and leaders of the American Revolution Identifies principals and functions of American constitutional government Explains key events in the growth of the United States Understands and uses new social studies vocabulary Uses historical data and documents to better understand events

11 Science Standards Recognizes effects of Earth’s rotation/revolution on day/night Describes the changes in the observable shape of the moon Recognizes light as a form of energy and explains it’s properties Understands how physical conditions influence weather Differentiates between weather and climate Gives examples of the effects of the water cycle on climate Understands the transfer of the sun’s energy within a food chain Describes altering of inherited traits due to environmental factors Recognizes how both instinctive/learned behaviors enhance survival
