GREEN STREET GREEN MATHS CURRICULUM EVENING

Much of the publicity about the changes to the National curriculum has focused on ‘higher expectations’ in various subjects, and it is certainly the case that in some areas the content of the new primary curriculum is significantly more demanding than in the past.

The current National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure all pupils:

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions..

If your child is achieving well, rather than moving on to the following year group’s work we will encourage more in-depth and investigative work to allow a greater mastery and understanding of concepts and ideas.

What are the key changes with the new curriculum? Larger numbers earlier Earlier introduction to formal written methods (see calculation policy) Focus on fractions Focus on problem solving * Y2 & Y6 currently using ‘old’ curriculum

No data handling in Y1 (starts in Y2) No probability Use of Roman numerals (Y4) No use of calculators until the end of KS2 Tables to 12x12 by end of Year 4
