A dog breeder knows that it is equally likely that a puppy will be male or female. Use a simulation to find the experimental probability that, in a litter of four puppies, all four will be male. COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 Simulate the problem by tossing four coins at the same time. Assume that male and female puppies are equally likely. Let “heads” represent a female and “tails” represent a male. A sample of 16 tosses is shown on the following slide. 12-2 Experimental Probability

(continued) COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 Trial MaleFemale 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Trial MaleFemale 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 12-2 Experimental Probability

12-2 (continued) COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 P(exactly four males)= 1 16 number of times four tails occur total number of trials Results will vary, but, according to this simulation, the experimental probability that in a litter of four puppies all four will be male is. 1 16 Experimental Probability

A player makes 7 free throws out of 12 attempts during a game. Based on this game, what is the experimental probability of this player making a free throw? COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 P(free throw) = number of throws made total number of attempted free throws 7 12 The experimental probability of making a free throw is. 7 12 12-2 Experimental Probability

A manufacturer of computer parts checks 100 parts each day. On Monday, two of the checked parts are defective. COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 a. What is the experimental probability that a part is defective? number of defective parts total number of parts checked P(defective part) = 2 100 The experimental probability is. 1 50 1 50 Simplify.= 12-2 Experimental Probability

(continued) COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 b. Predict the probable number of defective parts in Monday’s total production of 1,250 parts. Let x represent the predicted number of defective parts. Write a proportion. 1 50 defective total = x 1,250 defective total 1(1,250) = 50x Write the cross products. 1,250 = 50x Simplify. 12-2 Experimental Probability

(continued) COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 You can predict 25 parts out of 1,250 to be defective. 25 = x Simplify. Divide each side by 50.= 50x 50 1,250 50 12-2 Experimental Probability

A manufacturer makes computer circuit boards. A random check of 5,000 circuit boards shows that 25 are defective. 1.What is the experimental probability that a circuit board is defective? 2.Predict the number of defective circuit boards per month if the company manufactures 41,000 circuit boards in July. COURSE 2 LESSON 12-2 1 200 205 defective circuit boards 12-2 Experimental Probability
